Why Backing Type Matters
The patch backing determines how your patch attaches to fabric and whether it survives daily wear, washing, and outdoor conditions. Choosing the wrong backing means patches that peel, fall off, or damage delicate fabrics. This guide covers every backing type available and tells you exactly when to use each one.
1. Iron-On (Heat-Seal) Backing
A thermoplastic adhesive film is bonded to the back of the patch during manufacturing. Apply heat with a household iron or heat press to activate the glue and bond the patch to fabric.
How to apply
Pre-heat iron to cotton setting with no steam.
Position patch on fabric and cover with a thin cloth.
Press firmly for 25 to 30 seconds. Do not slide.
Let cool completely before handling.
For longevity, stitch around the edges.
Best for
Jeans, denim jackets, cotton shirts

Limitations
Weakens on nylon, polyester, and waterproof fabrics

2. Sew-On Backing
A plain twill or felt backing with no adhesive. The patch is stitched directly onto the garment by hand or sewing machine.

Uniforms, workwear, tactical gear

High-wash frequency items such as fire stations and medical scrubs
Any fabric where heat cannot be applied
Use a blanket stitch or tight zigzag stitch around the full perimeter. For patches on caps, use a curved needle for easier stitching.
3. Velcro (Hook-and-Loop) Backing
One side of hook-and-loop tape (the rough hook side) is fused or sewn to the back of the patch. The matching loop panel is attached to the garment. Patches click on and off in seconds.
